Perak is a Malaysian state located in the nortwestern part of peninsular Malaysia. Perak became an independent sultanate in the 16th century following the fall of the Malacca sultanate. Its rich tin deposits attracted the Dutch and later the British. In the late 19th century Perak became a British colony and saw a large influx of ethnic Chinese. Perak has a number of tourist attractions, including the royal capital of Kuala Kangsar and the cave temples around its capital Ipoh.
