The city of Paris, located on the Seine river in northern France, is the capital of France and its largest city. While the earliest human inhabitation goes back to 4200 BC, the first significant settlement was established by the Romans by the end of the 1st century AD. Paris became the capital of France in 1437, when Charles VI reclaimed the city. Nowadays the urban area of Paris has a population of almost 10 million inhabitants. The city of Paris has a huge collection of historical buildings, monuments, museums and interesting modern architecture and is a primary tourist magnet.
