The famous Sorbonne university in central Paris dates back to the 13th century, when it was founded by Robert de Sorbon as one of the first significant colleges of the medieval university of Paris. The Arc de Triomphe is a 50m tall monument in Place Etoile built during the Napoleonic era to commemorate the victories of Napoleon. The new opera on Bastille square was completed in 1989. Les Invalides is a complex of buildings on the left bank of the Seine river containing museums and monuments, all related to the military history of France. The St Alexandre Nevsky Russian orthodox church was built in the 19th century near Place Etoile to serve as a place of worship for the Russian community in Paris.
