Potsdam is a small city of 180000 inhabitants, located about 25km southwest of Berlin. Until 1918 it was a residence of the Prussian kings and the German Kaiser. Its main tourist attraction is the palace of Sanssouci, originally built as a summer residence for Frederick the Great, King of Prussia. Potsdam is the capital of the state of Brandenburg. With three universities and four research foundations, it is a big education and research centre.
