Theaterplatz (theatre square) is a square in the historic core of Dresden located along the Elbe river. Some of the major highlights of Dresden are on the Theaterplatz: the Semperoper opera house, the
Zwinger, the Dresden cathedral and the
Dresden castle. The Semperoper opera house was built in 1841 and rebuilt after a devastating fire in 1878 on a design by the architect Gottfried Semper, with a mix of architectural styles (early Renaissance and Baroque, with Corinthian style pillars). The Dresden cathedral (also known as Katholische Hofkirche, i.e. Catholic Church of the Royal Court of Saxony or more recently Kathedrale Sanctissimae Trinitatis i.e. Cathedral of the Holy Trinity) was built between 1738 and 1751, based on a design by the architect Gaetano Chiaveri in Baroque style.
