Sevilla is a large city in southern Spain, the capital of the autonomous community of Andalusia. The city was founded on the banks of the Guadalquivir river over 2000 years ago. It was conquered by the Moors in 712AD and became the capital of Muslim caliphate in Spain. In 1248 the city passed to the Castilians, following the defeat of the Moors. Sevilla has a rich cultural and historic heritage and is home to plenty of significant sites, of which the Alcazar, the Cathedral and the Archivo General de Indias have been nominated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
