Granada is a Spanish city in the southern Andalusia province, lying at an altitude of 738m about 50km north of the coast, not far away from the Sierra Nevada mountains. Granada was founded in the 11th century by the Moors and quickly became one of their most important cities in Andalusia. Following the Spanish conquest in 1492 it experienced a period of growth during the Renessaince. The major touristic highlight of Granada is the Alhambra, a Moorish citadel and palace situated on a hill overlooking Granada. The historic centre of Granada is full of interesting Renessaince and Baroque period architecture.
