The Slovak republic (Slovakia) was created on January 1st, 1993, when former Czechoslowakia split into two countries, Czechia and Slovakia. It is a small, mountainous country in Central Europe. Slavic tribes first moved into the area in the 5th century A.D. and united in the 9th century A.D. Between the 10th century and World War I the country was ruled by the Hungarians, then became part newly formed Czechoslovakia.
