The centre of Amsterdam consists of more than 100km of canals set up in a concentric pattern and 90 islands connected by 1500 bridges. The three main canals are Herengracht, Prinsengracht, and Keizersgracht. The canals were constructed in the 17th century and served for defence, water management and transport.
