The Schiphol airport lies about 10km southwest of Amsterdam and is the primary gateway for international air travel to the Netherlands. Amsterdam is surrounded by a maze of waterways and canals. Outside of the historic core of Amsterdam there are mostly modern buildings built in contemporary architecture.
