After years of neglect under the communist government, the historic core of Stralsund was restored after the German reunification starting in the 1990s. Nowadays it's a beautiful blend of historic and new buildings, with the original look and feel largely preserved. There is a large pedestrian area connecting the Alter Markt and Neuer Markt squares, with shops, restaurants and cafes.
