Tampere is a city in southern Finland located near the Tammerkoski rapids, which have been an important source of power throughout history. Due to the availability of inexpensive power Tampere developed into a major industrial centre in Finland. Tampere has 211544 inhabitants and is the third most-populous municipality in Finland. It was founded as a market place on the banks of the Tammerkoski channel in 1775 by Gustav III of Sweden.
