Before being merged with Taipa and Macau, Coloane was a peaceful island with nice unspoilt beaches and several hotels to the south of Macau. Its main attraction is the pictoresque St Francis Javier chapel which was built in 1928. Other interesting sites are various Chinese temples dedicated to local deities. Until the early 20th century Coloane was a haven for pirates.
