With a metropolitan area population of over 4 million inhabitants, Sydney is the largest city in Australia and the capital of Australia's New South Wales state. The city lies on Australia's south-east coast and was founded in 1788 by Arthur Phillip, initially as a British penal colony. Prior to the arrival of the British the area had been inhabited by Aborigenes for at least 30000 years.
Nowadays Sydney is a prosperous city and a tourist magnet, with the Sydney Opera House and the Harbour Bridge being its most well known landmarks. The metropolitan area of Sydney extends over many bays rivers and inlets. The centre of Sydney is dominated by the Central Business Distric (CBD), an area with many tall skyscrapers.
