The historic centre of Mardin is centered along the Birinci Caddesi street and contains a multitude of impressive buildings in Islamic architecture and a number of mosques and Christian churches. That is because in the past, in addition to Kurds, Arabs and Turks also Syrian orthodox Christians lived in the city.
