Wat Mahathat is a Buddhist temple complex in Ayutthaya, located in the centre of old Ayutthaya. Construction started in 1374 under king Boroma Radschathirat I; over the centuries many additions were made to the temple complex. The temple was damaged when the Burmese sacked Ayutthaya in 1767. In 1956 the site was restored by the Thai Government.
