Jeddah is a major city in the western region of Saudi Arabia,
situated along the Red Sea coast, 900km southwest of Riyadh. With a population of 5.3 million inhabitants it is the largest city in Makkah Province and the second-largest city in Saudi Arabia.
Jeddah is known for its bustling port, which is one of the busiest in the region and serves as a gateway to the holy city of Mecca for Muslim pilgrims from around the world. The city is also a major commercial hub and an important center for international trade, with a thriving economy based on industries such as petrochemicals, construction, and tourism.
Jeddah looks back to a long history. It first achieved prominence around AD 647; in the 15th century it became the centre of trade between Egypt and India. The historic centre of Jeddah has been a UNESCO world heritage centre since 2014.
