Lisbon (Lisboa in Portuguese), the capital of Portugal, lies on the River Tejo. It's a beautiful town with an impressive concentration of monuments, historic sites and interesting buildings. It seems to be a combination of Paris and Barcelona, only better - with the flair of Paris, but without its pollution and chaos and with a waterfront like the one in Barcelona. There is a harbour, but the town is surprisingly clean. Lisbon has been settled since ancient times and became a city under the Roman Empire. In 1255 Lisbon became the capital of Portugal.
