Senja is an island located along the coast of northern Norway, about 50km southwest of Tromsø. With an area of 1586 km² it's the second largest island in Norway. Its terrain is mostly mountainous and the island extends for about 70km from southwest to northeast and 50km from southeast to northwest at its widest point.
Senja has some pretty impressive scenery, especially along its northwestern coast where a number of peninsulas extend like fingers into the ocean and there are bays with white sand beaches. The climate is relatively mild, considering that Senja lies north of the Arctic circle. The best time to visit Senja is in July and August.
There are a number of hiking trails, of which the one to Mt Segla in the north of the island is one of the most scenic.
Compared to the Lofoten islands, Senja receives a relatively small number of tourists. It has close to 8000 inhabitants. The most important industry is fishing and there is some mining and manufacturing.
