This photo gallery contains a selection of pictures of Mandalay. Although the city today is Myanmar's cultural centre, it has a relatively short history, having been founded in 1857 by King Mindon to fulfil a prophesy.
One of the city's major sights is the Royal Palace, which unfortunately was completely destroyed by American bombs in WW2 and has been reconstructed after the war. Mandalay also contains a large number of pagodas - some very spectacular ones. From the top of Mandalay hill you enjoy a good view over the town.
