Mongolia is a large, land-locked country located in northeast Asia between China and the Russian Federation. It measures 2400km from east to west and 1000km from north to south and has an area of 1.5 million km². Mongolia is a mostly mountainous country, consisting to a large extent of high plains at altitudes above 1000m asl. It is relatively dry, with a large desert, the Gobi desert, in the south. The population consists of 3 million inhabitants, of which 95% are ethnic Mongols, a nomadic people. In the 13th century the Mongol empire controlled the area between Ukraine in the west and Korea in the east and was the largest contiguous land empire in world history.
