Northwest of Georgetown are some beaches, of which Batu Ferringhi and Tanjung Bungah are the largest ones. These get most tourists who visit Pinang and want to spend some time on a beach. These beaches are far from impressive and consist of a narrow strip of yellowish sand. The seawater is very dirty, probably due to the proximity to a large urban centre and an industrial area. In addition, western tourists in swimsuits meet Asian tourists who are on the beach more or less fully dressed (see for instance photo Nr 13).
