Ban Xang Hai, a small village near Luang Prabang, is an example of the very rapid development the region has experienced over the past five years. In April 2000 most houses in Ban Xang Hai were of the traditional wood and tree leaves type. When we visited the village in December 2005 the entire village had changed, with almost all houses now being brick houses and lots of souvenir and handicraft shops catering to tourists.
