The Bongeunsa Buddhist temple near the COEX convention centre was initially built in 794 by Yeon-hoe, then the highest ranking monk of the Silla dynasty, and was later rebuilt in 1498, after the restrictions on Buddhists were released. The oldest structures still standing today date back to 1856.
