The Western Wall, also known as the Kotel, is an important Jewish religious site in the old city of Jerusalem. It commonly refers to a 57 m long exposed section of ancient wall situated on the western flank of the Temple Mount. This section faces a large plaza. The Western Wall is the holiest site of the Jewish religion and is in practice a giant open air synagogue, where Jews come to pray.
