The Zayandeh-rud river is the largest river on the central plateau of Iran. It originates from the Zagros Mountains and runs 400 km eastward before ending in the Gavkhouni swamp, a seasonal salt lake. The Zayandeh-rud river has significant water flow the whole year. During the summer months the water levels in the river drop considerably.
