Jaisalmer was built around an oasis in the Thar desert by prince Jaisal in 1156. It grew to be a major staging post on the trade route across the Thar desert from India to the west. The city is mainly built with golden sandstone and is dominated by the Jaisalmer fort, which was built on a triangular hill.
