Ten times larger than any Hungarian city, Budapest was created in 1872 with the joining of Buda and Pest, originally two separate cities. It soon became the second most important city of the Habsburg empire after Vienna. Budapest was heavily damaged in World War II, but has been rebuilt since then. Nowadays Budapest is a tourist magnet.
