The Alaverdi cathedral (ალავერდის მონასტერი in Georgian) lies 20km from Telavi, the regional capital. It's an 11th century cathedral built by King Kvirike of Kakheti. The cathedral is in a compound surrounded by walls. With a height of 55m it was the tallest religious building in Georgia, until the completion of the Holy Trinity Cathedral of Tbilisi. The Gremi fortress is located on a small hill next to the Gremi village and contains a large cathedral, built in 1565 by king Levan of Kakheti. The Alazani river is originates in the Caucasus and flows eastwards for 351km until it reaches the Kura river.
