Denmark is a small Scandinavian country, bordering Germany to the south and Sweden to the north. It has a population of 5.6 million inhabitants and the official laguage is Danish. The country consists of the Jutland peninsula and a number of islands, of which Zealand (on which the capital Copenhagen is located) is the biggest. A series of bridges now connects the Jutland peninsula with Sweden, enabling overland travel between Germany and Sweden. Denmark has been inhabited since 12500 BC with agriculture being practiced since 3900 BC. Between the 8th and 10th centuries the Danes were known as Vikings. Denmark reached the apex of its power between the 14th adn 17th centuries. Nowadays it's a kingdom with a parliamentary democracy. It's a wealthy and developed country with an advanced and diversified economy. Denmark is a member of the European Union and is part of NATO and the Schengen area.
