Loket (German: Elbogen) is a picturesque town in the Karlovy Vary Region of the Czech Republic, located 140km west of Prague and 40km east of the border to Germany.
It is a popular tourist destination due to its its well-preserved medieval architecture, the castle and its stunning setting on the meander of the Ohře River. The town is often referred to as "Loket Castle" because of the prominent Loket Castle (Hrad Loket), which is a significant historical landmark in the area.
The 12th century castle sits atop a rocky hill overlooking Loket, surrounded on three sides by the Ohře river and providing excellent views of the surrounding countryside.
The city dates back to the 13th century, when a settlement started to grow around the castle.
