The Ban Jelacic square is a large, rectangular square in central Zagreb, dominated by the statue of Ban Jelačić, a local hero who led a 19th century battle against the Hungarians. The square is a popular meeting point in Zagreb. Ilica is a very long street starting in the Ban Jelacic square and extending for 6 km westwards. It's one of the main shopping streets of Zagreb. South of the Ban Jelacic square there is a large, mainly pedestrian area with cafes, restaurants, shops and parks.
