Perched at an altitude of 4580m on the western margin of the Tibetan Plateau in Sichuan Province,

the Jiagenba viewpoint is a high-altitude terrestrial platform offering a direct and uncompromising prospect of one of Asia's most significant mountain vistas. Its primary orientation provides a commanding view eastwards, across deep valleys, towards the central peak of Gongga Shan (Minya Konka). At 7556m Gongga Shan is the highest mountain outside the Himalaya and Karakoram ranges, forming the dramatic culmination of the Daxue Shan (Great Snow Mountain) range.
The viewpoint's considerable elevation places observers in a subarctic climate zone, characterised by sparse vegetation, rocky terrain, and thin air. The location is strategically positioned to frame the entire Gongga massif, allowing for observation of its major glacial systems, including the Hailuogou Glacier, which is visible in the broader panorama. The Daxue Shan range itself, a formidable north-south trending barrier, forms the primary divide between the Dadu and Yalong rivers. From Jiagenba, the serrated peaks of this range, many exceeding 6,000 metres, recede into the distance, illustrating a profound geological uplift caused by the ongoing collision of the Indian and Eurasian tectonic plates. Access to the site typically involves traversing high mountain passes, and the view is subject to rapidly changing weather conditions, with clear mornings often providing the optimal visibility for which the location is renowned.
