Most of the buildings along the round Zhogshan square were built during the Japanese occupation between 1905-45. The red brick Dalian Police Department, built in 1908, is now used as the office of the Overseas Economy & Trade Cooperation Committee of Liaoning Province. The Dalian City Hall, designed by Shigemitsu Matsumuro built in 1917, later became the Daqing Bank, the predecessor of the Bank of China, and is now an Industrial & Commercial Bank of China office. The Dalian Branch of CITIC Industrial Bank, built in 1909, formerly was the Bank of China building. The Zhongshan branch of the Bank of China lies in the building of the former Dalian branch of the Yokohama Shokin Bank, built in 1907.
