Guiyang, the capital of Guizhou province, occupies a strategic position in the province's central heartland, seated on the east of the Yunnan–Guizhou Plateau. Its geography is defined by an average elevation of 1100 metres and a humid subtropical climate, notable for its temperate summers. This climatic character has earned the city official recognition as a premier summer retreat, with a historical designation as a "Forest City" owing to its significant greenery.
The urban settlement's history stretches back to military outposts established during the Sui and Tang dynasties, though it was under the Yuan dynasty that it became a formal administrative seat. The area has been a site of continuous habitation for millennia, with its modern name, Guiyang, formalised as a city only in 1941. Today, the city serves as the province's undisputed political, economic and cultural hub.
Its demographic composition is notably diverse, being home to a substantial population of ethnic minorities, including the Miao and Bouyei peoples. Economically, Guiyang has evolved from a traditional industrial base for aluminium and phosphates into a significant centre for big data. It has become a hub for technological innovation and maintains its status as a national transport node, underlining its contemporary importance in the southwest.
