The Gobi is a large desert region in China and southern Mongolia measuring over 1600 kilometers from southwest to northeast and 800 km from north to south, which make it one of the largest deserts in the world and Asia's largest. About 5km from the centre of Dunhuang are the Mingsha Shan sand dunes of the Gobi desert, a set of huge dunes about 200m high, and the Moon Crescent lake.
