The Temple of the Earth (地坛 or ditan in Chinese) is a Chinese temple in a large park In Beijing, northwest of the Forbidden City, not far from the Lama temple. The temple was built in 1530 during the Ming dynasty. In the southwestern section of the compound there is a large square altar (Fangzetanm square water altar) measuring about 100m x 100m. This is where the emperors of the Ming and Qind dynasties performed the ceremonies of offering sacrifices to the earth.
The Ritan (日坛 in Chinese) park in the Chaoyang district east of the Forbidden City is where the Temple of the Sun was located. In its southwestern corner there is a big lotus pond.
