The Old City (İçəri şəhər in Azerbaijani) is the historic core of Baku. It is surrounded by walls and has an ellyptical shape (approx. 400m x 600m in size). It is located at the southwestern end of Baku, not far from the waterfront. The old city has been listed as a UNESCO world heritage site since 2010, even if it contains many 19th and 20th century buildings. It dates back to the 12th century. The Maiden Tower is a 30m tall structure at the southeastern end of the old city, probably built for religious or defensive purposes. Inside the tower there is a small museum.
