Vienna, whose origins date back to the Roman empire, was the capital of the Habsburg empire which controlled much of Europe for over 600 years. Vienna experienced its golden years as the cultural centre of Europe in the 18th and 19th centuries. In this period of time the emperors of the Habsburg dynasty expanded the city with magnificent buildings as s tribut to their own power. Nowadays Vienna is filled with architectural gems and draws a large number of tourists every year. With 1.7 million inhabitants Vienna is the capital of Austria and its cultural and economic centre.
