The Upper town is medieval core of Zagreb. It is located on a small hill overlooking the lower town. In this area there are several government buildings and 19th and 20th century buildings. The picturesque St Mark's church is located in the homonymous square in the centre of the upper town. This church is built in late gothic style with some romanesque features. Originally completed in the 13th century, it was radically modified in the 14th century. On the roof of the church, tiles are laid out to display the coat of arms of Zagreb and the Triune kingdom of Croatia, Slavonia and Dalmatia. A funicular connects the upper town with the lower town.
